Age: You can enjoy flying at any age but you will need a Student Pilot License prior to flying your First Solo, which can be achieved on your 16th birthday. You may pass all your testing at 16 years but must be 17 and 18 to fly as private and commercial respectively. Medical: You require a class 2 medical for private and class 1 medical for commercial from an authorized aviation doctor, prior to issue of your student pilot license. We can provide you with a list of approved doctors. Where do I go to get an aviation medical done? You can go to the casa web site or click on this link http://www.casa.gov.au/avmed/search.htm. Pick the area and follow your nose. Please remember you must have your student license papers and you aviation reference number in order for this medical to be completed by the DAME (Designated Aviation Medical Examiner) Can I use my own plane? Yes but we prefer you to use the club plane until you have passed the GFPT, once this has been achieved you are welcome to use your own plane and it will cost you less. Where do I get the application for a student pilot’s license? You can go to the casa web site or click this link http://www.casa.gov.au/manuals/regulate/fcl/form639.pdf. You will notice on the application form you also need to apply for either an ASIC or AVID. ASIC (Aviation Security Identity Card) or AVID (Aviation Identity Card)? ASICs and AVIDs show that the holder has a current security check but only an ASIC can be used at security controlled airports. ASICs are normally valid for up to 2 years and AVIDs are normally valid for up to 5 years. While an AVID and an ASIC are both evidence that background checks have been undertaken, the background checks for the AVID are not equivalent to the checks for the ASIC.At a minimum, all pilots 18 or over must undergo the background checks for an AVID. Only those pilots who require access to a secure area of a security controlled airport will need to undergo the more robust background checks for an ASIC. To streamline processes and remove any duplication, pilots who undergo the background checking for an ASIC do not have to undergo the background checking for an AVID. If you plan to fly into a security controlled airport that has RPT services you need to have an ASIC. We recommend that you have an ASIC card just in case you wish to fly into security controlled airport but the choice is yours. |
